Technology & Comforts

Dental care shouldn’t just be effective-- it should be comfortable as well. Along with our years of experience, we can ensure this because Ellicott City Smiles is dedicated to using only the latest dental technology. With it, we can provide even better care in less time while protecting our patients from discomfort. To learn more about some of the great tools we can use to give you the easiest dental experience of your life, simply read on below.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Nervous about going to the dentist? Terrified? If so, oral conscious sedation may be exactly what you need. Your dentist will prescribe you a pill to take about an hour before your appointment so that by the time you sit in the treatment chair, you’ll be completely physically and mentally relaxed. You’ll still be awake the entire time, but you’ll likely have very little memory of your visit afterward (which is just perfect for some patients!).

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Need just a little help to feel completely comfortable at the dentist? Nitrous oxide has been used for over 100 years to help soothe anxious dental patients, and it’s so gentle we can even safely use it with children. A patient simply inhales the odorless gas through a small nasal mask, and within a minute, they’ll feel a warm, relaxing sensation. After their procedure is over and the mask is removed, the effects wear off almost instantly, allow a person to go on about their day normally.

Digital X-Rays

Digital dental x-ray on computer

Digital x-rays enable us to catch potentially hidden dental issues faster than ever before while keeping our patients completely safe. Compared to traditional film-based x-rays, digital x-rays can be created in much less time, don’t require toxic darkroom chemicals to be developed, and better yet, the machine emits up to 90% LESS radiation. Plus, because everything is entirely digital, images can be shared, stored, and sent infinitely in an instant.

CT / Cone Beam Scanner

Patient receiving 3D cone beam scan

Our mobile CT/Cone Beam Scanner enables us to create a fully 3D x-ray image of your teeth, jaw, and other surrounding structures. With it, we’ll be able to precisely plan your dental implant placement procedure. We’ll be able to locate where the bone is thickest to ensure the treatment’s success and avoid sensitive nerves to make sure you’re comfortable the entire time. With this tool, we’re able to customize the procedure so that it is perfectly suited for your exact smile.

Soft Tissue Laser

Soft tissue laser wand

Lasers were first introduced to dentistry in 1994, and since that time, they have become one of the most versatile and useful tools dentists use every day. At our practice, we utilize them for sensitive periodontal therapy and gum recontouring procedures. A dental laser can instantly remove harmful bacteria and even excess tissue to create a smile that is both healthy and beautiful. It is so precise that it leaves any surrounding healthy tissue completely unaffected, which helps reduce discomfort both during and after any procedure.

Cavity Detection System

Cavity detection system

Thanks to DIAGNOdent, we can detect even the slightest signs of tooth decay and intervene before it can ever develop into a cavity. It uses a beam of light to scan the thickness of the enamel and can find signs of decay that would normally be missed during a traditional visual exam. With this tool, we can help you preserve more of your natural teeth over time, which will lead to sustained oral health and less time spent in the dental chair.
