Are you getting close to finishing your orthodontic treatment<\/a>? Certainly, you can eagerly look forward to having a smile that is free of brackets and wires! But before you cross the finish line, you may want to know what you can expect with braces removal. And what will you need to do in order to maintain your results? This blog post can prepare you for the road ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Braces Removal Is Easy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to get their braces removed. The brackets are designed to easily come off your teeth with the help of a special instrument. You might experience a bit of pressure during this process, but there should be no real pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the braces are off, a member of your care team will polish away any remaining adhesive before your dentist performs a final examination. They may also take some X-rays and photos to document the end of your treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the details of your case, the braces removal appointment may take 1 \u2013 2 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First 48 Hours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You might notice some mild discomfort during the first 48 hours after you get your braces off. Your gums and teeth may be extra sensitive, and you could experience some minor swelling in your soft oral tissues. Try to be gentle when brushing and flossing. Rinsing with warm salt water can calm inflammation. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary. If you experience severe pain, call your dental team for assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintaining Your Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Soon after your braces are removed, you will move on to the maintenance phase of your orthodontic treatment. You will be required to wear a retainer, a custom device that is designed to prevent your teeth from drifting back into their previous positions. If you do not wear it as instructed, you might accidentally undo the results of your treatment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In most cases, it is necessary to wear a removable retainer full-time (20 \u2013 22 hours each day) at first. As your teeth gradually become more settled into their new positions, you may be able to wear your retainer only at night. Eventually, you might need it for just a few nights each week. If it ever starts to feel uncomfortably tight, that may mean you are not using it enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
